I'm obviously going to be a little biased up front, but **Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother**[^1] is easily one of the greatest films I've seen this year. It's hard to talk about because the parts of it that speak to me will only really make sense to you if you're Muslim. But for one, I think that's a good thing: it’s nice to have a movie so purpose-built for *me*, in a way that's more often the case for my Christian and (quite often) melanin-challenged siblings. And on top of that, this movie is a fantastic character-driven action-drama regardless. Like you don't have to know a single thing about Islam to enjoy this film, in my opinion.
Mahershala Ali delivers a beautiful performance[^2], but John Cho, Adia, and Jahleel Kamara all hold their own with him as well. The action is restrained, which makes the moments where Ali gets physical all the more impactful. The choreography of the fight scenes is absolutely stellar — but the honestly the whole movie is gorgeously filmed as well.
One thing that makes this movie so amazing to me is how well it portrays various types of Muslims. There are Muslims who are hypocritical in their faith. There are “cultural” Muslims, who only really go through the motions because it's all they know. There are Muslims completely disillusioned by their faith. There are the devout, and the ones who sneak food during Ramadan. We aren't often, if ever, given this level of complexity on screen, obviously. That diversity makes the film much more comprehensive, even if it'll definitely get the more conservative aunties and uncles clutching their pearls if they ever see it (they shouldn’t). The movie expertly weaves Islamic tradition and history without turning into a heavy-handed lecture.
Part spiritual introspection, part emotional family drama, part action-thriller, part comedy. **YMx3** hits on all cylinders. I can't recommend this movie enough.
[^1]: henceforth affectionately going to be calling it “YMx3” to save my precious littler writer fingers
[^2]: and is also a “beautiful looking man” according to my mom (she’s right)
