## 2025-06-29 I’ve made my thoughts on [[The Switch Post-Mortem|the Switch]] pretty clear, and had no plans to get the [[Nintendo Switch 2]], at least on launch. But it was gifted to me, so here’s some thoughts after like, two weeks or so? If you don’t like to read my stuff and just want to tl;dr: well first, ow, but second, the **Switch 2** feels like an incremental upgrade, something that exists to refresh the aging **Switch**. In that sense I’d consider it pretty good. If you never got the first **Switch**, then the **Switch 2** serves as a **PS5**-like worthwhile purchase in the sense that you can now play a lot of **Switch** games that run better and feel smoother. In truth, that’s been the best aspect of the **Switch 2** for me these past few weeks. **Echoes of Wisdom** doesn’t stutter anymore, **Mario & Luigi: Brothership** runs at a stable framerate, and **Pokemon Violet** functions now[^1]. Hell the most time I’ve spent with the system has been playing **Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition**. That game struggled to maintain an uncapped 30FPS and was low resolution on the original **Switch**, but it’s a steady 60 and 1080P in both handheld and docked on the **Switch 2**. It feels weird, talking about this. Resolutions and framerates and 4K and HDR. This traditionally has felt like shit that [[Nintendo]] has never given a shit about, but now it’s a core part of their marketing. ![[Thoughts on the Nintendo Switch 2-1751213171113.png]] It’s wild to see Nintendo talk about *processing*, of all things. But I guess what else is there to talk about? The **Switch 2** is the **Switch**, but bigger and more powerful. And I mean that first part by the way — the thing is very chunky, at 4.5 inches tall, 10.7 inches wide, and with an 8 inch screen. Unfortunately, it’s still not very ergonomic. The joy-cons are probably the worst controllers in history. The new ones are bigger, which is nice for someone with my meaty claws, but they still have that Taylor Swift back. If you’re going to be about as big as a **Steam Deck** you may as well add some curve to those 'cons. But like most things involving the **Switch**, I’m probably in the minority there. I’ve already stopped using the thing in portable mode until the better grips I ordered come in the mail, which is something I’d be *way* more irritated about if I paid for the console myself. All of that sounds pretty negative, but I’ll probably like the **Switch 2** more than I ever did the **Switch**, or my **PS5**, which has been staring at me through the window like Squidward for years now. And that’s because unlike Sony, Nintendo will actually get some games out on their system. Plus, I *would* actually like to try to play the **Switch 2** in handheld mode more when I can, which will hopefully help me appreciate it more. I sit at my desk less and less after spending all day with it at work, so I tend to play my Deck or [[Less Doomscrolling More Silly Lil Tech Toys|silly lil tech toys]] on the couch whilst the TV gets used. But I can’t really recommend it to anyone but two camps: the most hardcore Nintendo fans who were already going to buy it anyways, and people who didn’t own the original **Switch**, the probability of which is extremely unlikely because everyone on planet earth owns one. *However*, the other thing is that I have much more of a reason to use my **Switch 2** compared to the original as a remote working dude. And that’s the fact that the thing actually outputs at 4K and high-resolution on my TV and monitor. When I talked about its predecessor, I mentioned that if I wanted to play a game that isn’t a Nintendo exclusive, why would I do it on anything *but* a home console? That isn’t an issue anymore, so the idea of getting an indie game or whatever on the **Switch 2** becomes more appealing, especially as someone who can’t stand sitting at my computer desk after 5PM anymore. Those are my thoughts on the **Switch 2** so far. They aren’t definitive, and I actually made a todo task 6 months from now to revisit this post — hence the date at the top. You’ll notice I didn’t talk about the library for this thing at all because it doesn’t exist. I don’t need to tell you about **Mario Kart**, it’d insult your intelligence. So once some more games come out and I can actually hold this system in my old man hands, I’ll have more to say. [^1]: This doesn’t save the game from still being mid but I digress
