## 2025-08-03
I’m a little bit of a James Gunn hater, I’m ngl. I got tired of his schtick pretty quickly by the time **The Suicide Squad** came out. His brand of humor just isn’t my thing. So when I heard he was making the next **Superman**, I was slightly concerned.
Those concerns were thankfully unfounded. 2025’s **Superman** was a blast. It might be deemed a little overstuffed by some, but I didn’t really care. I appreciated how much of a *Comic Book* Movie it felt like. It was sincere in its goofiness, and the portrayal of Clark Kent in particular was pitch perfect. I thought the twist, which I won’t get into detail about here, was a nice spin on a familiar formula, and helps emphasize the aspect of Superman that makes him so unique: his immigrant status.
It’s 2025 — you can tell because everything around us is on fire. **Superman** presents a story about an “illegal alien” in a way that’s hopeful and positive, which of course got [a lot of conservatives very mad](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UTmXzzRxeBg). Which makes it even better, to be honest! It’s nice to have a story that’s so inspiring and even a little cheesy. Superman is the personification of the idealized version of America that convinced my mom to immigrate here in the first place, and channeling that in his film version is important.
It’s not going to blow you away, but as someone who’s pretty tired of superhero movies, I found **Superman** to be a nice bucking of the trend. If you’re even a little bit interested, I’d say check it out.
