I've been thinking about rating things.
I, as a general rule, don't rate stuff, or if I do, it's not public facing. I have a property for it in my Obsidian files for my own personal ranking of things, but I find rating to be a little bit of a crapshoot. Everyone's numbers are different - my 2/10 might be different from yours, you know?
That said, I used to operate on a 5 star system, but I actually don't like the lack of granularity. On the same token, I think a 0-10 scale is *too* granular, especially because amongst people who engage with media, there's a misguided idea that anything less than a 7 is pure garbage.
So I've adapted a 1-7 system for stuff. It's a nice middle ground! I got the idea from [[Steph Ango]], Obsidian CEO, but I've made some adjustments to what each number means.
7 — **Perfect**[^1]
The kind of thing that will probably show up on [[Writing About My Favorite Games|My Favorite Games]] list.
6 — **Excellent**
The best of the best. Will probably show up in [[My Games of the Year 2024|my games of the year list]] for that particular year.
5 — **Great**
The sort of thing that I will probably enjoy in the moment and forget soon afterwards, but then stumble back across and go "oh hey this was great!"
4 — **Passable**
Generally where I'd say you have to be a particular fan to enjoy it. For example, I'd put **Rune Factory 5** here, and only recommend it to farming sim fans who wouldn't mind its flaws.
3 — **Bad**
Absolutely not for me, but I won't stop you from enjoying whatever it is.
2 — **Atrocious**
The same as above, but I will hate it even more and probably write [[Final Fantasy XVI is Exhausting|a scathing post about it]]
1 — **Evil**
Something that has changed my life for the worse, or something that I consider to be doing active harm on the world. s
I like this rating system because you can apply it to anything. It's not related to a specific type of media or experience, so it's just as valuable for a videogame or movie as it is a restaurant or app.
That's all, figured it'd be interesting to take a peek behind the curtain. Maybe I'll start surfacing those ratings now and then if what I'm talking about exists in the 1-3 or 6-7 ranges. We'll see!
[^1]: Yes yes, perfect to *me*. Don't be an annoying pedant!
