## 2025-03-09 Enjoyed this movie overall. I love **Snowpiercer** and this movie had those vibes. It felt excessive, but I feel like Bong earned this after **Parasite** so it's fine. Robert Pattinson continues to be an absolute acting force of nature. His ability to play two different characters that are the same person but also not was phenomenal. All of that said, I found the final third of the film to not be very impactful after thinking about it. I thought the aspects and ethics of cloning would be more thoroughly explored, but they weren't. Unfortunately for me, the cloning stuff was what made me interested in this movie in the first place. The back-half of the film is basically just **Princess Mononoke** in the snow - and like, that's *cool*, but I've also seen it before? But that doesn't mean I don't appreciate the lack of subtlety. Just because I've seen it before doesn't mean that others have, or that the don't need the movie's heavy-handed political messagery hammered into them in our current climate. > [!Warning]- Spoilers > Probably the best part of the movie is the resolution of Mickey's ability to be happy. I love that 17 seems like he's unhinged and needlessly violent, but the reality by the end is that he's really the part of us that should be angry about the injustice that we face. The part of us that recognizes that to achieve peace, sometimes violence *is* the answer. And also the part of us that knows what is and isn't our fault. The conversation that effectively reveals that 17 is the voice in Mickey's head that lets him know it's okay to be happy before they head out into the snow is more awesome to me the more I think about it. > > I also liked that the love interest who's name I can't remember right now seems like she's going to be off her rocker or something, but it's played completely straight. She's not unhinged, she's just the only person that recognizes what we learn later - that *every* Mickey we see is Mickey, and that he should be accepted for who he is in all ways. That's something basically no one else in the movie tries or cares to try to understand. It's neat! Not a perfect movie but I definitely enjoyed it and will be happy to watch it again in the future.
