Not very often you get movies about Sudan and its culture and history — and by “not very often,” I mean “never.” So **Goodbye, Julia** is great based off that alone. But it’s also just a fantastic film in general. A beautifully shot, acted, and directed film about the conflict between North and South Sudan that boiled up in the mid-1900s. **Goodbye Julia** takes a very human approach that's unflinching in the way it portrays the pain that Southern Sudanese people experienced during this period of time, which is why a lot of Sudanese people like to act as if it’s a-historical. The truth is difficult, but it’s also the truth.
I don’t know how much you’ll get out of a movie like this if you’re not Sudanese yourself — there’s a lot of little things that will fly under your radar if you don’t know the culture. But it’s a worthwhile watch regardless. If you like strong, character-focused drama which also serves as a history lesson, then you could certainly do worse. The ending is especially thought-provoking, with its final shot being something that will be etched into my brain long after having watched it.
