I read this whole book in one exhaustive plane ride. It was fantastic from beginning to end. It tells the story of a premier luxury resort in low Earth orbit, where the privileged go to enjoy themselves while the Earth burns below them. Here, a reunion for a class of the Rochford Institute is underway. Rochford is peak-Ivy League energy, compromised of the richest and “most impressive” students on or off earth. These students are all competing to get the most points on their Mars applications so they can get off the dying planet, because only the “best” should get to save themselves.
It’s basically [[Glass Onion - A Knives Out Mystery|Knives Out]] meets **Snowpiercer**[^1], and I enjoyed it a ton. It tackles a lot, and I’ve seen people argue that the novel doesn’t get to all of it. I heavily disagree – everything the book says about capitalism ties into the various student plotlines, but to say more would risk spoiling the book. Obviously I think it’s worth reading, so if any of the above sounds interesting, definitely grab it! Plus it’s made by a gay Filipino author! Hell yeah.
[^1]: I saw someone say it’s similar to **Parasite** but like. Come on man. At least pick Bong Joon Ho’s Sci-Fi movie to compare against this Sci-Fi book, lmfao
