It was thus: "Man, I wanna watch something spooky, but not like, too heavy, because that'd be depressing." And then I booted up Malignant. Malignant is such an unserious movie, and that's the best part about it. James Wan apparently got to make it in exchange for making whatever Fast & Furious came out that year, and it shows. He loved making this headass movie. There is no substance to it. Hell, you could barely call it horror. But it's such a highly entertaining ride that I don't care. The climax to this movie was worth every minute of the usual Blumhouse Horror build-up. In fact, I love watching this movie with people who haven't seen it before in particularly just to see their looks of gasps and confusion when *that* scene happens. Beyond that, it actually does some pretty fun stuff with genre conventions. A great example of this is how after an hour of jump scares, a character heads into a very, very spooky setting. You keep waiting for the other shoe to drop. And it never comes! James Wan straight up playing with our minds. I could watch this movie 100 times tbh.
